REFLECTION ABOUT LEARNING ICT

This is my third time I learnt about ICT that included in my course lists. The first time is during my secondary school and the second time is during matriculation. However, during this semester, I learnt many new things that I did not know or even exposed before. Actually, when Dr.Sophia introduced the learning outcomes of this course (Information and Communication Technology in Science), I thought this course is not interesting and does not has distinct important. However, after I have been through for 14 weeks in this course, it was actually fun and provide more knowledge for me. The knowledge is not comprised about the applications of ICT but also the moral values. For examples, Dr.Sophia teaches us on how to be open-minded person, be the effective and perfect teachers.

First, I learnt on how to use the Smart Board by Miss Aimi. This is the first time I learnt on how to use Smart Board because I never see the Smart Board before. The Smart Board is the interactive electronic whiteboard that is better than common PowerPoint where the demonstration and presentation become more alive and interesting. There are many colorful tools in the Smart Board besides there are also duster and color pens that specifically used for this Smart Board. This Smart Board is sensitive to touch, thus I just can demonstrate my presentation by clicking on the Smart Board. Besides that, the Smart Board also can accommodate different learning styles. For instance, I use the colorful pens to draw and then erase my drawing using the provided duster. On the same time I can show the video and the other activity tools just by touch to the desired items, making it as the audience’s attractor besides I am also enjoy on using this Smart Board.

I also learnt on how to create my blog and use all the tools in the blog in order to make e-portfolio (teaching portfolio). Before that, I had tried to create my own blog. I do realize that creating my own blog is more interesting and enhancing my curiosity to explore about the use of blog. Thus, for every week, I entered the ICT class and keep improving my skills in using blog such as inserting pictures and video using scribd and google doc. My teaching portfolio is about all the things I have done during this semester and my focus goal is to complete it with anything about this course (ICT in Science). In my opinion, the application of blog give many advantages for example we can share anything about what we have learnt and experiences with our friends and other followers. Thus, we can gain more knowledge as well as improving and developing ourselves. Besides that, the blog is like virtual interactions among the bloggers where we can communicate even not meet face to face. I can communicate with my classmates and my other friends at the outside by sharing our contents and commenting for any improvement. As blog is about ‘sharing’ our content, I think this is the better way where we can gain more knowledge and transferring our knowledge by blogs. By blogging also can eliciting my idea on creating new beneficial posts where can develop my cognitive, psychomotor and affective skills especially in teaching and learning skills.

From my reading, data logger is an attractive and alternative device that able to accept a greater number of input channels, with better resolution and accuracy. During the ICT practical class, I had learnt on how to use the data logger on collecting data by conducting an experiment in determining human body regulation (temperature). After the experiment, I transfer the data into the computer and I can see that the data was quite accurate because the data logger reads the changes of temperature and humidity for every second, even there are slightly changes. This is why the usage of data logger is more compliments in the experiment compared to manually way to take the measurements which can lead more errors. In my opinion, the data logger should be supplied to all the school thus students can gain more accurate results when conducting the experiment; preventing them from misconception.

As the conclusion, the application of Smart Board, blog and data logger have their own advantages in order to help us in teaching and learning process. Without these applications, it is hardly to reach the peak of mountain in order to see our education system lie on the same level with the other developed educations.

SIMULATION AND MODELLING

Simulation and Modelling Ppt

REFLECTION ABOUT SIMULATION AND MODELLING

1. SIMULATION

In my opinion, there are many advantages of using simulation in teaching. For example, my group had chosen ‘DNA structure’ as the simulation. Why we choose DNA structure? This is because most students know the term of ‘DNA’ but they do not really know the structure of DNA, as the DNA is micromolecules in our body. How can we see the DNA with the naked eyes? Thus, by using the simulation video about DNA structure, I can show them the invisible DNA become visible. This way of introducing the lesson with simulation can stimulate the student’s curiosity about the DNA. Comparing to the manual pictures or drawing about the DNA structure, students usually imagine the DNA structure and this situation can contribute to the misconception about the DNA structure. Besides, the simulation video facilitate teacher during teaching by attracting the student’s interest to watch that video. And, the students and teachers can easily to access this video by pause, stop, and increase or decrease the volume or even restart.

2. MODELLING

From my view, the modelling is more interesting and effective way in teaching and learning. This is because we can change any variables and see the responding effects. Our group had chosen the ‘natural selection’ as our modelling. We can change the variables (fur, tail and teeth) as well as the environment (equator and winter) and predator (wolves and foods). In reality, it takes a long time for natural selection to occur because it is also evolution of the species. Thus, by using this modeling, we can understand the concept of natural selection by trying to use any variables and see the consequences of the variables directly in several minutes. I think the modelling is better to be used in the teaching and learning but combining both simulation and modelling can be the best decision.

REFLECTION ABOUT CYBER CRIME

Cyber crime is said to be the crime that involve the computer or network. The recent statistics from CyberSecurity Malaysia shows that the cases reported about the cyber crime had been increase exponentially.

“From AsiaOne (27 April 2011), Zahri Yunos as the CyberSecurity Malaysia chief operating officer said that is the increase in cyber crimes in Malaysia over the last two where more than 3, 500 of them reported in the first three months of this year and some 8,000 cases were reported last year due to internet usage and broadband penetration that now stood at 55%; which is increased exponentially. In the first quarter of this year, this organization handled 3,563 cases which is 36% or 1, 273 cases were related to online fraud and there are 400 sites detected in phishing sites targeting local banks. Moreover, he said that industry estimates revealed that the cost of cyber crimes worldwide could easily reach US$1tril (RM2.9tril). “

There are several types of cyber crime, but the cyber crime can be divided into two characteristics (1.crimes that target computer networks or devises, and 2. crimes that use computer networks or devises to advance other ends). The computer viruses, denial-of-service attacks and malware are part of first character of cyber crime. The cyberstalking, fraud and identity theft, information warfare and phishing scams are included in second character of cyber crime.

In my opinion, the increasing number of cyber crimes cases is due to the increasing exposure to technology widely around the world. Nowadays, more people are assumed to use the technology in their daily lives, especially internets. As the internet is broadly being connected, thus some people take advantage on this upgrading technology to do crimes. Moreover, people tend to be influences by their curiosity on something news and gain profits, without investigate the sources, especially from the internet. Thus, it is much easier for criminals to use this ICT to do some crimes.

I realized that there are several effects of this cyber crime in all expects such as the moral degradation among the new generations, loss of revenue, wasted time, damaged reputations, and reduced productivity.

Thus, all parties should take this problem seriously. Not just think about the solution to overcome this problem but also think on the solution to prevent the factors that contribute to the cyber crimes. Do not judges to the government only, but parents also play the important roles to educate their kids to use the technologies; wisely. Individual awareness is the most considerable thing in order to overcome this cyber crime. The ICT is functioning to develop human knowledge and facilitate in daily life demands, not to be misuse for self advantages.

REFLECTION OF SMART SCHOOL

The smart school is a learning institution that organizes and systematically invented in the improvement of teaching and learning as well as school management processes. This is one of the transformations in educational system that Malaysia had created in order to support and drive the new upcoming generation with higher demands to fulfill Vision 2020. This demands not only to achieve that Vision 2020 but it is also complementary with the National Philosophy of Education that objectively to develop the potential of individuals in a holistic and integrated manner with provided intellectual, spiritual, emotion and physically balanced. This Smart School is said to be catalyst in order to achieve both Vision 2020 and this National Philosophy of Education.

The national curriculum and pedagogy are given the highest importance, with the priority on the role of teachers, administrators, parents and the community enhanced in the education of the Malaysian students. ICT is critical in making the teaching and learning processes easier, more fun and effective, as well as making communication and management among the stakeholders more efficient. The Malaysian Smart School is a place where all students can learn within a conducive learning environment. It offers various curricula with on-going evaluation, handled by professional administrators and teachers
In my opinion, this invented Smart School to several schools is quite beneficial because these schools are able to be as indicators for the failure or success of the implementation of Smart School curricula and systems. The usage of ICT in the teaching and learning is one of the Smart School objectives, providing students with high-tech knowledge and enable them to gain more knowledge from all over the world.
But, there are several disadvantages of its implementation. The most distinct one is the implementation requires high cost investments. This is including the importation of ICT instruments from the developed countries to be applied in the Smart School. It was expensive in that purchase or trading of the ICT instruments because surely Malaysia as the developing country cannot be able to create its own modern teaching and learning instruments. Besides that, government must ensure that all the teachers in those Smart Schools are able to utilize the ICT instruments properly and wisely. Thus, Ministry of Education has conducting continuous courses in order to develop and improve or expose the teachers with those highly teaching-based technologies.

Even there are other problems evolved after the Smart School implementation, the Smart Schools are seem to give the better improvement in teaching and learning systems. Thus, people should compare between the impacts and disadvantages of the Smarts Schools, not just consider one part only because we are Malaysian that should be together in order to develop our country. As the conclusion, I think the Smart Schools is the better step to drive the goal of Vision 2020.

DISCIPLINE POLICY

Every classroom needs a set of procedures to manage the array of activity that students create. Many teachers consider it important to review such class expectations during the first days of school, especially expectations related to student discipline. A classroom discipline policy is a codification of these expectations, a point of reference for teachers and students throughout the year. The examples are:

1. Respect others.

2. Keep silence when anyone is addressing the class.

3. Keep the classroom neat.

4. Bring required and suitable things into class.

If they commits mistakes or ignoring even break the policy, we (as teacher) should consider these things:

  • Make positive consequences frequent and varied. for instance, sending positive notes home, class parties, individual privileges (e.g. taking care of a class pet), etc. Besides, we can use class-wide rewards for individual behavior; it reinforcing and encouraging.

  • Make negative consequences logical and progressive. This might look like:

    • 1st Offense - Warning

    • 2nd Offense - Student-Teacher Conference (after a cooling-off period)

    • 3rd Offense - Detention (students do a special assignment like an apology letter)

    • 4th Offense - Student-Parent-Teacher Conference

    • 5th Offense - Disciplinary Referral to the Vice Principal

Mini Project

In the group consists of three member, my friends and I had given all our best effort to do the experiment using data logger. Before our group and other groups are given to proceed our experiment, we need to make our catchy title, engage, empower and enhance regarding to our chosen topics. Actually, my group was decided to do an experiment entitled ‘Acid-Base Titration’. However, there is misunderstanding regarding to this topic where we thought that this experiment cannot be conducted anymore because Dr.Sophia had already presentd it in lecture. Thus, we brainstormed to get the new topic and then we came out with ‘the effects of combustion’. Unfortunately, there is no oxygen sensor thus we have to change again our experiment. For the 2 hours, we do the experiment using DO to replace the oxygen sensor. But, it was waste. There is no data being collected and it just like a messy and useless work. Due to that problem, we do an appointment with Dr.Sophia and discuss about new experiment (after I spend my evening at library). Alhamdulillah, Dr.Sophia approved our new experiment and then we conducted the experiment of ‘The effects of light intensity to the rate of transpiration’. We used the temperature and humidity sensors to indicate the rate of transpiration at two different situations; in the presence and absence of light. For each situation, we spend for about 20 minutes. There are many advantages of using the data logger in conducting this experiment, where:

1) We do not need to measure the temperature and humidity manually

2) We can do other works during that period

3) The reading was taking for every second thus we can see even there is slightly changes in temperature and humidity

4) We do not need to draw the graph and collect data because the data logger already store the data automatically

5) Data logger helps in measuring and collecting data that cannot be measured manually, such as humidity

6) Less errors and bias during the measurement because the data itself measure the temperature and humidity automatically, thus provide more reliable result

7) Easy to set up the experiment using data logger where we just put the humidity and temperature sensors in the plastic that covering the plants, rather than put the thermometer in that plastic.

REFLECTION ABOUT DATA LOGGER

(A) (A) First trial

I had exposed and use the data logger during conducting Physic’s experiments suac as the experiment on determining the density of substances, acceleration and velocity, and free falling bodies using PASCO. This semester, my friends and I are given a mini project that requires us to use data logger. During the practical class, I learnt on how to use data logger using several sensors such as pH, temperature, and humidity. There are other sensors provided such as C02, DO and magnetic sensors. Our first task is to use the data logger to determine the human body regulation, using temperature and humidity sensors. At first, I cannot be able to set up the data logger and after I ask Cik Aimi and my friends, then I knew the better ways to use this data logger. The data logger is then connected to a laptop that has its software and we come with a view of graph as well as data in table form. From our result, we present the data in front of class using smart board and compare our result with the other to check for reliability and validity of data. How amazing it was when the graph shows the pattern regarding to the changes in the temperature and humidity. From the graph itself we can understand the concept of regulation of human body. This is our result that shows in graph form:

REFLECTION OF IWB

This is my first time where I was being introduced with the ‘Smart Board’. For me, the smart board is rarely used in Malaysia especially in teaching and lesson process. The smart board has many interesting tools even though it is quite similar to the Microsoft PowerPoint. The differences between smart board and the PowerPoint are:

Smart board

PowerPoint

Can be touch on the board

Cannot be touch on the screen

Have many activity tools

No activity tools

More interactive

Common use

New exposed ICT

Common use

Expensive

Less expensive

Less utilized by educational institution

Common utilization in educational institution

Up-to date

Being used for since previous decades

Actually, the smart board is easy to be used even though I thought this smart board is quite troublesome before. But, after several times using this smart board I think it is interesting and more attractive to be used especially during presentation. However, the familiar problem in using the activity tools in the smart board is we need to touch it carefully because the board is sensitive to very smooth or very tough touch. If not, we need to calibrate it. In my opinion, it is quite difficult to make all the schools in Malaysia even high educational institutes to have this smart board because it is costly, new and need to be kept safe. Otherwise, government should spend more finance for this smart board and for its maintenances.

REFLECTION ABOUT ICT

ICT is the acronym for information and communications technology. ICT consists of IT as well as telecommunication, broadcast media, audio and video processing and transmission, and network based control and monitoring functions. ICT plays the major items nowadays because of the well-spread uses and its accessibility all around the world.

In my opinion, the ICT give advantages and disadvantages. Here I listed some advantages of using the ICT in education:

1. Increase accessibility at all places

2. Processing of data is much faster on the computer

3. Repetitive processing can be better done using computerized machinery

4. Searching for information and data is much faster

5. There is no limit on data storage capacity

6. Data communication and transmission are fast and accurate

7. Data can be output on a computer in a variety of different formats

8. Up to date and real world technology

9. Provide people that modern, upgrade, knowledgeable, and open-minded

10. Increase the interactions among peoples all around the world

11. Sharing the knowledge with all educators and students all around the world

12. Make the teaching and learning process more interesting and effective

13. Provide reliability of lesson materials

14. Many software that can help in making lesson material as well as exercises

While, here are some of advantages of ICT:

1. Many teachers need to adapt with the updated usage of ICT

2. Increase cyber crimes

3. Students tend to search for other references compared to their teacher and books

4. Teachers tend to use full ICT-based teaching in classroom

5. Sometimes, there are problems with ICT set up during class session

6. Not all the information in the internet are reliable

7. Teachers with no training on this technology have no access to use ICT in class session, thus they do not know how to teach classes
